Take for example the pole in one of the most interesting Olympic event, the pole vaulting. In the youngest years of Olympics, pole vaulting utilized bamboo then aluminum. These materials however decreases the vaulter's running speed which allows him/her to vault lower plus the energy it wastes as it straightens up which also helps the vaulter to reach their goal. The pole of pole vaulting sport is composed of filament wound of fiberglass core wrapped with woven carbon fiber and epoxy resin as the second layer and the outer cover with unidirectional carbon fiber and epoxy resin.

In the early records of dental filling, Amalgam, one of the materials used for tooth restoration after decay damages the tooth, is composed of liquid mercury, silver, tin, and copper. This material had been used for more than a hundred and fifty (150) years. It is also referred to as “Silver Filling” because of its appearance.

Another material used for tooth filling is Composite Resin or “White Filling” which is a tooth-colored plastic, again used to reconstruct decayed teeth. This was developed in 1962 by combining epoxy resin and methacrylic acid with silanized quartz powder.

The material for your dental composites consist of resin matrix (organic content), fillers made of either quarts, ceramic or silica (inorganic part), and coupling agent.

Having a composite resin offers a couple of advantages and disadvantages, as well. First advantage is that dentists can easily blend shades to create a nearly identical color as that of a natural tooth. Second, composites offer adhesive property to your tooth supporting the remaining structure which helps prevent breakage. It also provides insulation from excessive temperature changes.

The disadvantage is that you may experience sensitivity after. The color of your filling can also slightly change especially when you drink tea, coffee or other staining foods. You can somehow talk to your dentist which filling to use for your comfort. Composites somehow tend to wear off sooner than Amalgams in larger cavities, though they also work well with smaller cavities.

Although, composites have a life expectancy an average of two (2) to ten (10) years.

Fiberglass for Artworks

SEA Expo 2012

PolyKlear Composites together with Swancor and Techni-Ice Philippines, joined the recent SEA Expo at One Esplanade from March 3-4, 2012.

The event was participated by some of the biggest companies in marine industry. The latest in marine technology and transportation were featured, too.

From our side, PolyKlear Composites and Swancor showed how and where high quality fiberglass and resins can be applied to marine industries. Our sales and technical team were ready to answer the questions from our many visitors. From the many applications to the different types, we should how beneficial our products are to the industry.

Our sister product, Techni-Ice, was also present to demonstrate the practicality of the product as opposed to buying wet ice during a fishing trip, boat party, or marine food transport.

Again, we would like to thank the organizers for inviting us at the recently concluded event. We would also like to thank the visitors who dropped by at our booth. We hope to see you in other future events.
