Fiberglass Lantern

Christmas is in the air and it's time again for the lantern festival.

But have you ever wondered about fiberglass being incorporated in a lantern? ('Cause we certainly have!)

Indeed it had its grand incorporation to Philippine's most talked-about lantern display, the Pampanga's Giant Parol Festival or the Ligligan Parul.

Fiberglass is a component for making the body of vehicles like cars, boats and motorcycle because aside that it is lightweight, it also contributes to the sturdiness of the whole material.

The Giant Lantern Festival in San Fernando, Pampanga, Philippines is held annually on the Saturday before Christmas Eve. This was to honor President Manuel L. Quezon for helping the people's economic growth.

The star had been part of the Filipino Christmas celebration. This was based on the star during the birth of Jesus Christ with which the said "three kings" followed to the Saviour's manger. Philippine Lantern had been using Papel de Hapon and in the progress, colored plastic to decorate these elaborate lanterns until 2010 when the first fiberglass-made lantern was introduced through San Pedro's entry to the contest.

2012's Giant Parol Festival will be held on the 15th of December at Robinson Starmills 2012 Lantern Festival Set. This will be an exciting wait to see which barangay uses fiberglass in their ginormous lantern display and jive it with dancing lights!

What Green Building Means to Us?

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), also known as the Rio Earth Summit or Rio+20, in Brazil on 20-22 June 2012 will mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). The Summit represents another milestone in ongoing international efforts to accelerate progress towards achieving sustainable development globally and aims to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and address new and emerging challenges.

To celebrate this milestone, the Philippine Green Building Councils, together with the Solid Waste Management Association of the Philippines (SWAPP), United Architects of the Philippines – Manila Corinthian Chapter (UAP-MCC) and the Ayala Foundation, Inc. (AFI) are inviting different industries to tell our counterparts on what green building means to us.
